Delays for Amsterdam city break visitors

City break visitors to Amsterdam faced delay over a strike by baggage handlers at Schiphol Airport.

Handlers working for passenger support firm Menzies Aviation walked out after pay talks broke down. Some 20 per cent of the Menzies workforce of 500 went on strike in demand for a 3.5% pay increase. The company is offering 1.5%.

Menzies handles only about 10% of Schiphol Airport's baggage serving 16 airlines but the action, for an indefinite period, is likely to cause delays to flights, check-in and carousel collection at one of the airport's busiest times of the year.

Menzies took legal action to stop the walkout but courts ruled in favour of the workers' right to strike
