Fly to Amsterdam with coconuts
Amsterdam’s status as an environmentally aware city was given a boost last week, when Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Airlines, picked Schiphol Airport as the final destination for a trial flight powered by coconuts.
The new biofuel, which is a mixture of babassu oil and coconuts powered a Virgin jumbo jet which left London on Sunday. Some environmentalists are understandably suspicious of what seems to be a blatant PR stunt, but Branson has pledged billions of pounds of Virgin Travel profits to tackle climate change over the next decade.
We at TravelSavvy wonder whether burning the world’s future food is the right way to solve this problem. However tests like these are important as leading scientists are all beginning to agree that our way of life will have to change significantly in the years ahead.
