City crackdown on crime in Red Light District

The city of Amsterdam is set to crack down on organised crime in the Red Light District. Dubbed 'Operation Emergo, police will make regular sweeps of the Red Light area to disrupt criminal activity.

The Red Light District is a popular haunt of many tourists in short weekend breaks in the city. Coordinated action by police, justice ministry, the city authorities and the tax service will attack the criminal organisations believed to be active in the area.

The city has tightened its grip on the Red Light District over the past year, but has mainly targeted businesses operating in the open, Now they aim to tackle 'underworld' organisations. The Amsterdam authorities fear legitimate businesses are being subverted by 'underground' networks. Of major concern is money laundering in real estate and in prostitution, the coffeeshops and other establishments in the neighbourhood.
