WI 'experts' visit Red Light District
While many visitors to Amsterdam on a city break head for the city's Red Light District, it's a little more unusual for signed up members of the Women's Institute to be found window shopping there.
A British TV programme, The WI Guide to Brothels, included a visit to Amsterdam's Red Light District. The programme came about as the Hampshire Women's Institute recently passed a resolution calling for the legalisation of brothels. Two Hampshire WI members, Jean and Shirley, were enticed by the programme makers into places we guess were new to them!
"Can you give me some information about the Ass Midget?" asked one of the ladies while holding a twelve-inch black plastic garden gnome. The proprietor of the Amsterdam sex shop she's standing in was eager to help. "People like to stick it up their arse," he explained, as Jean rapidly returned the item to the shop's bottom shelf!
Jean and Shirley also gamely posed in an Amsterdam window brothel, to the surprise of passing punters. The programme was certainly a new current affairs angle for the WI to explore. The organisation has famously starred in nude calendars, captured in the fim 'Calendar Girls' but some WI members feel their serious interest in legalising brothels may have been over-exploited in this latest offering for the TV cameras.
