Book lovers look set to be heading for Amsterdam after UNESCO announced it the World Book Capital. It took the title thanks to its reputation for good books and the high numbers of bookshops and book festivals.
Amsterdam keeps the title until April 2009 and already on this years' calendar of events are the Amsterdam Literary Festivals on May 18 with more than 1,000 stalls to be set up in one of the largest street markets to be held in the city.
Already under way is Amsterdam in Words, an exhibition of authors' quotes and portraits that runs until June 23. The work on display relates to Amsterdam city sites, such as streets, canals and parks.
And from June 1 to September 8 there is Poetry in the Park when ten of Amsterdam's parks will host two days of poetry readings starting with Vondelpark and ending at Westerpark.
