Shoebox rooms at Amsterdam hotels

Soaring rates for Amsterdam hotel rooms have prompted a shrink to fit strategy which will have travellers sleeping in windowless boxes.

The new Qbic hotel already rents out "cubis",  the size of a walk-in wardrobe, and opening soon is an Amsterdam hotel made entirely of  prefabricated pods, built off-site.

Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport is also set to erect another chain of pods called CitizenM. The rooms may have nice touches like and king-sized beds but they measure less than 100 square feet.

They're being manufactured in the countryside of the Netherlands and everything is incorporated - from the wall mounted TV to the toilet paper in the bathroom. Once complete they'll be driven to the site on lorries and thrown up in record time.
