Why Monaco is the greatest race

The eyes of the sporting world will be on Monaco this weekend as the most glamorous and exciting race of the Formula 1 season takes over the Principality.

If you have never been to Monaco and want to know why it's so exciting, just read Kevin Garside's report in Britain's Daily Telegraph. His description takes some beating: "If you want to know what Monaco is about, what Formula One is about, stand at the midpoint of the swimming pool section and pray. Pray that the prototype rocket coming your way like a bullet does not have your name on it.

"At this point the car is pitching and twitching like a victim of St Vitus' Dance. No matter that you know the man at the wheel is notionally one of the 20 best drivers in the world, that he is on top of his game, the senses are telling you to dive into the harbour. Better to be a fool than a corpse. The noise boils the eardrums. At the very last moment, the death sentence is lifted as the car snaps violently to the right and passes under your nose. "

OK, it's the toughest track to overtake on which means the practice sessions are vital. Pole position often wins the race. It can be a bit of a procession. But this year, with wet weather forecast, anything could happen. Let's just hope, remembering Kevin's words, nobody does have to dive into the harbour!
