Nice tramway an example to all cities

If it's been a few years since you visited Nice, and you want to avoid driving in the busy French resort, you'll be delighted by the city's new tramway. It opened in November 2007 and the 8.7 km service now covers the centre of the resort. The focal point is the pedestrianised Place Massena, which has also benefited from a major refurbishment. From here trams run every few minutes north and east.

North takes it through the shopping district of Jean Medecin, past the train station to the Nice football stadium. Heading east, it runs down Jean Jaures, skirting the Old Town, and through the Place Garibaldi towards the eastern extent of the resort.

The trams themselves are stylish and an example to other cities struggling to cope with overcrowded streets. With Nice airport only 3km outside the city, an efficient rail and bus service along the Riviera and now a splendid new tram service, there's no need to take a car into Nice whatsoever.
