Riga suffers as food prices soar

Latvians are facing massive rises int he coast of food as inflation rages at around 16% annually. The overall rate hides eve higher rises for individual items

Last year the price of cheese in the Lativian capital of Riga jumped a huge 44% and bread prices have soared 30% in just three months.

The high price rises are not only affecting local people, but tourists may be put off this year as prices rise in hotels, restaurants and cafes.

Experts say the problem is made worse by the switch to western style monetary policies which is swelling the money supply meaning more cash chasing fewer goods.
