Free Christmas tree offer upsets Riga rangers
An invitation to Latvians to chop down their own Christmas trees has run into trouble. Latvian authorities offered some Christmas cheer by inviting people to cut their own Christmas trees for free at state owned forestry plantations.
But the move has angered forest rangers in Riga who are chasing them away. The pine forest is about 50km from the capital and Christmas tree hunters turned up in droves following the free tree offer.
But the Riga forestry agency said they knew nothing of the scheme and were turning people away from the protected area. Angry rangers have protested at the free tree offer and say the forests only have a few suitable fir trees and those are protected.
