Latvian airline see strong demand
The Latvian airline airBaltic says the most popular destination from Riga last summer was Copenhagen.
It follows analysis of operating results for March 25 to October 27. Statistics show that Copenhagen was the top city break destination for Latvians with Oslo, Stockholm, Berlin and London close behind.
Other popular new routes included Rome, and Athens. The cheap flight carrier airBaltic had more than 1.3 million passengers during the summer season.
Passenger numbers rose more than 40%, and most passengers travelled to Riga or Vilnius. Demand for new routes has increased dynamically – nearly 20,000 flew to Rome, and more than 17,000 to Athens
During the summer of 2008, airBaltic will open nine new routes to Venice, Nice, Ålesund, Billund, Sochi, Yerevan, Chisinau, Almaty and Kuopio from Riga airport to add to its current 48 destinations.
They will also launch three new destinations - Paris, Simferopol and Odessa - from Vilius and operate flights already on 22 routes.
During the summer of 2007, airBaltic opened 11 new routes from Riga and seven new routes from Vilnius. The Latvian airline airBaltic during 2007 transported a total of 2,007,150 passengers, or 41% more than in 2006, when the total number of airBaltic passengers reached 1,425,276.
