Riga holidays - not for Latvians?

The Baltic Institute of Social Science has recently published an interesting survey detailing Latvian's reluctance to engage with public national holidays. The most popular holidays in Latvia are those which are associated with solstice traditions, with almost all Latvians in attendance. However less than half the population in Riga will celebrate Latvia's independence day Nov 18th, with even fewer paying any attention to May 4th, which marks the day in 1990 when Riga's independence was restored. The population's main gripe seemed to be that many of the Riga festivals were organised around the great and the good, giving everyday citizens no role.
