Riga hosts meeting of Baltic States

For the last seven years July the 4th has been the annual meeting for the Baltic Sea States Summit. This year's summit was held yesterday in Riga and concludes Latvia's year long presidency of the CBSS.

The summit is a good opportunity for prime ministers from 11 countries in the Baltic region to get together and discuss issues such as a trade, tourism and economic development. Sinikka Bohlin from the Standing Committee of the Baltic Sea Parliamentary Conference (BSPC), was first to speak at this year's meeting emphasizing the need for effective co-operations across the Baltic region.

Other areas of discussion included education, ways of creating a stronger civil society and the need for renewable energy sources to be found in the next 10 years. It will please Riga that these issues are being discussed, as the Latvian capital has been striving to improve energy efficiency and the education of it's young people for many years.

Denmark now takes over the presidency starting officially on the 1st of July. No doubt the Danes will have a slightly different list of priorities to work through.
