Drownings rise as heatwave sweeps Latvia
As many as 12 people are believed to have drowned in Latvia in a single weekend as a heatwave has swept the country. The national Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed the deaths as soaring temperatures prompted scores of people across the country to cool off by taking a splash the ponds, rivers and the sea. The loss of life at the weekend has taken the death toll by drowning this year to 120 people, including 13 children. In 2006 the total number of deaths for the whole year was 128.
