City traffic jams a nuisance for Riga
Tired of city-wide snarl ups Riga is cracking down on traffic jams that plague the city. Bottlenecks are so many that public buses and trolley buses are failing to meet timetables. Now many stand empty in rush hour traffic as passengers decide walking home is quicker.
This year alone nearly 35,000 new cars have been registered in the city and rush hour jams can last for just that - hours. Now the council is considering odd and even days for car users so that those with even or odd numbered plates are allowed in only on certain days of the week. Other measure may mean special bus only traffic lanes.
