Riga bans right wing marchers

A court in Riga, Latvia, has banned a march by an ultra-loyalist group in a tribute to Waffen SS veterans of World War II.

Riga has already rejected three applications by several organizations to hold the event and the only group to be permitted to stage a brief street march on Sunday is a WW II veterans' organization.

A Riga march in 2005 held by the Latvian Legion ended in several arrests after fighting with Russian protesters. The event is to honour a 1944 battle between German and Soviets on the Velikaya River in northwest Russia.

Moscow says is concerned at alleged assault on Soviet war veterans and the growth of fascism and nationalism in the Baltic States.
