Riga Midsummer Fair under way

Riga's traditional Midsummer Fair has been under way this weekend in Old Town Riga's Dome Square. It has featured singing and dancing from folksong groups, choirs and dance troupes.

More than 300 merchants have set up stalls for the fair selling flowers, teas, cheese, fish, honey, traditional bread and other delicacies. Craftsmen are also showing ceramic and linen articles, wooden spoons, jewelry and other goods.

Apart from the annual fair on the square, an event celebrating the coming of summer solstice was held in the  courtyard of Riga Castle with concerts, cheesemaking and a Medieval banquet.

The traditional “Solstice Fires on Riga’s Hills” will also continue the summer solstice tradition. Fires are lit on a number of hills around Riga including Tornakalns, Agenskalns, Grizinkalns and Ciekurkalns.

The events, celebrating the coming of Midsummer holiday in Riga are organized by Riga City Council Culture Department.
