Drive to attract winter visitors

A tourism brainstorming session is to be held in Seville in September looking for ideas to promote Spain as a winter holiday destination. With Seville thought to be Europe's hottest city with soaring temperatures in the height of summer, it is a city that will appeal at times other than in the August heat.

The Costa del Sol is already being promoted with the somewhat straighforward slogan, "Winter in Spain" but, hopefully, the delegates to the Seville meeting will come up with something a little more inspiring! Details are not available until after the Seville meeting when the tourist authorities will launch their campaign for winter holidays in Spain.

The drive follows a reported 30% cut in Spaniards' own holiday spending and July was not a good month for Spain's all-important tourist industry. The country's other huge industry, construction, is suffering a severe downturn as the world credit crunch bites, particularly hitting the once lucrative market for second homes.
