Water taxis profit from Venice city breaks

Venice may be sinking into the lagoon but water taxi operators are riding high on fat profit margins.

Water taxis may be the smartest and quickest way to get about Venice but they are also the most expensive way to zip around the collection of islands that make up this popular holiday break city.

Even a short trip of around 15 or 20 minutes can cost up to 100 euros as Venice boat owners cash in the estimated 20 million tourist holidaymakers that are expected to pour into Venice this year on their popular city breaks.

The big payout is for  the privilege of being bounced about on a jerky ride around Venice canals on a bleak and bleary morning. It's hardly the price of a Bellini, but  it's not exactly cheap either.

Best stick to the vaporetti, or Venice canal ferries, that provide transport services every few minutes to all the main Venice tourist attractions.
