To Venice by train
Anthony Lambert in Britain's Independent newspaper describes a grand tour around Europe by train. One leg will be of interest to those travellers who want to see two of Europe's finest cities - Prague and Venice. This is what he says:
"Trains from Prague on to Venice cross the Semering Pass, overlooked by Klamm castle, improbably perched on a pinnacle of rock. The train runs along the shore of Wörthersee before distant views of the Dolomites and the expectant approach to Venice Santa Lucia station.
"As exits from stations go, this has to be one of the most astonishing sights for first-time visitors, for the station fronts right on to the Grand Canal and its tumult of gondoliers and vaporettos weaving between the sweep of palaces and churches."
Anthony Lambert's fine article makes you want to get straight on to booking a ticket. He's so right about arriving in Venice by rail. While you can jump a vaparoretto from the airport for a superb first sight of the city from the water, stepping off the train and straight into the city proper takes some beating.
